Christmas sing a long
The 3rd and 4th grade students participated in the Intermediate School sing a long this morning and Mrs. Dickerson read the Polar Express along as the students viewed the pages and lyrics via PowerPoint. The students had a great time! See you after break!

Our Hearts go out to Newtown, Connecticut!
Gov. Dave Heineman today, in accordance with the proclamation
from President Barack Obama, announced all U.S. and Nebraska flags to be
flown at half-staff in respect for the victims of the tragedy in
Newtown, Connecticut. Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset,
December 18, 2012.
Chadron PD investigate possible abduction
(Chadron)-The
Chadron Police Department received a report from a middle school aged
student that he/she was approached after school around 3:30 p.m. and
offered candy by two male subjects dressed in all black and wearing
black ski masks. When the student ran away, he/she reported that the
males left in a red four door pickup with a black topper and black
windows, southbound on Shelton Street in Chadron NE.
The
Chadron Police Department aggressively searched the area for the
suspect vehicle and conducted multiple interviews, over the past several
days, of other witnesses in the area and in very close proximity to the
reporting middle school student. Chief of Police Tim Lordino says; “As
of today, we cannot positively confirm that this incident took place and
out of an abundance of caution and concern, we have notified regional
law enforcement agencies in Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming and
Colorado. We have also asked regional law enforcement agencies to assist
in looking for the suspect vehicle reported by the middle school
student. We have also notified our local school district and the Chadron
State College and will continue with our ongoing investigation.”
“Almost
every day we read in the news paper or online of a child being abducted
molested or missing. An adult’s worst nightmare can be minimized
through appropriate safety tips and education about “stranger danger”
and what you should do to keep your child safe and secure. Please take
time over dinner tonight and converse with your child about these safety
tips;”
· Tell your child to treat all strangers as if they are dangerous and never assist or help a stranger.
· If
a stranger comes towards your child, teach them to run away in a safe
and secure direction and immediately tell a safe adult, a teacher, a
fireman, a city worker, a police officer or run into an open business
and tell an employee.
· Teach
your child to run away from strangers who offer rides, candy, gifts or
other promises or who ask for directions. Do not get into a car with a
stranger for any reason.
· Talk
to your child about how to answer the phone or door when you are away.
Never answer the door unless you and your child agree upon a list of
safe adult’s ahead-of-time.
· Your child should call you immediately if a stranger tries to contact them at home, on the phone or via the internet.

Young Farmer and Rancher Award Winners Announced at Convention
Nancy
Anderson of Crawford was selected as the winner of Nebraska Farm
Bureau's 2013 Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet and Luke and
Erin Norman of Crawford were named the recipients of the 2013 Young
Farmers and Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture award. Both awards were
given at the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation's 95th Annual Convention
held Dec. 3-4 in Kearney. Anderson received the top score of four
contestants who advanced to the final round of the Discussion
Meet contest. The Normans were recognized for their ongoing involvement

Students Work for a good Cause
Students at Chadron Intermediate School helped raise money for the Shop with a Cop Program. Thank you for helping this be a Merry Christmas Season for everyone! Students earned popcorn and a movie for their efforts.

Check Presentation
We will have a brief check presentation to the
Chadron Volunteer Fire Dept. for the money that we raised from selling
the Jump Rope for Heart/Fire Dept t-shirts on Friday, December 14,
during half time of the varsity boys basketball game at the Middle
School gym. We would like to have as many students/staff/parents that
we can wear their shirts and be part of the presentation -- and
hopefully in the picture for The Record! Hope to see you there!! (Yes, tonight!!)

Over a Decade of Service
Charles Kuskie received special recognition last night at the December Board Meeting. Mr. Kuskie has been a member of the Chadron Board of Education for 11 years. A special cake was shared with the board and patrons in his honor.

NRD Poster Contest - Winners!!

The Upper Niobrara White NRD (UNWNRD), helped in sponsoring a themed poster contest. The posters were judged at a regional level by the UNWNRD, then passed to NARD to compete at the
state level and finally to the NACD to be judged at a national level. The contest was open to kindergarten through twelfth grade students in the UNWNRD which covers Box Butte, Dawes, Sheridan and most of Sioux Counties. The categories were K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. We have several VERY talented artists with great perspectives on this very important topic!

BE A CHAMP!
Have you ever seen a blind person with a guide dog and wanted to know more about how they work together? When you see a guide dog at work, you are watching a highly trained team. Each partner's contribution is essential for independent travel. As the head of the team, the blind person's role is to maintain control of the guide dog and to dirt the animal where the handler wants to go. He or she does this by giving the dog directional commands such as "Forward," "Left," and "Right," which are sometimes accompanied by hand gestures. the guide dog's role in this partnership is to obey these commands, except when to do so would place the team in danger.
The CSC Social Work Class 435 Presented "Be a Champ" to the kids. They discussed how to act around someone who was blind. We met their guide dogs and learned that when they are working we should not ask to pet them. Teachers received some great resources to share later with the kids. The kids were a great audience. We are so proud of them.

Book Sale (A Buck a Book)
CIS Library will be selling discarded books to students for $1/book. Proceeds will go to the Shop with a Cop Program. This event will run right after school from 3:05-3:30 next Monday-Thursday (December 10-13).
